[1] In 1965 Mongolia to the WHO made an application with the request to no longer use the term Mongolian Idiocy (Mongolism) and its derivations due to the negative and racist occupation. The WHO unanimously accepted this application. As early as 1961, the renowned British science magazine The Lancet had changed the name in Down’s syndrome (German: Down syndrome) on the request of an international group of nineteen recognized geneticists.

[1] 1965 richtete die Mongolei an die WHO einen Antrag mit der Bitte, den Begriff Mongolian Idiocy (Mongolismus) und seine Ableitungen aufgrund der negativen sowie rassistischen Besetzung nicht mehr zu verwenden. Die WHO nahm diesen Antrag einstimmig an. Bereits 1961 hatte die renommierte britische Wissenschaftszeitschrift The Lancet auf die Bitte einer internationalen Gruppe von neunzehn anerkannten Genetikern die Bezeichnung in Down’s Syndrome (deutsch: Downsyndrom) abgeändert.
